Weekly Weather Watch: Monday, August 19th, 2024

Record heat continues across the Southern U.S., while record cold is reported for parts of the West and more widespread in the East. Heavy rainfall and severe thunderstorms impact several areas of the country. A historic tornado season continues.

HEADLINERS:

  • There is a Slight Risk of excessive rainfall over parts of New England on Monday.

  • On Monday, there is a Slight Risk of severe thunderstorms over parts of the Central High Plains.

  • Parts of the Southern Plains are under excessive Heat warnings, and parts of the Southern Plains and Lower Mississippi Valley are under heat advisories.

  • Moderate risk of excessive heat for portions of the Southern Plains, New Mexico, and southeastern Arizona, Sat-Sun, Aug 24-25.

  • In Western Canada, there are air quality and heat-related alerts.

  • Eastern Canada has issues around heavy rainfall from 40-60mm.
    Canadian Maritimes - Ernesto will have some impact: moderate to heavy surf along the Atlantic Coast of Nova Scotia, and some rain and moderate winds to southeasternmost Newfoundland. Large waves can be expected there later today.

  • There is a slight risk of excessive heat for portions of the Southern Plains, New Mexico, Lower Mississippi Valley, and the Sonoran Desert, Sat-Fri, Aug 24-30.

  • There is a slight risk of excessive heat across parts of the Northern and Central Plains, Sat-Mon, Aug 24-26.

  • Rapid onset drought risk for portions of the Southern Plains and Lower Mississippi Valley.

Rainfall expected through the week highlights another push of the Southwestern Monsoon, Florida will be wet, the Pacific Northwest can catch some water and we can even spread more water to the Northern High Plains into the Canadian Prairies.

TROPICAL TIDINGS:

Ernesto continues to provide rainfall and surf impacts to the coastal areas of New England to The Maritimes. There are no prominent areas of tropical cyclone development elsewhere at this time.

This year, tornado records have been set. More tornadoes have been recorded in 2024 than in any other year (period starting 1950) for Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky (*tie), Missouri, Nebraska, New York, Ohio, and West Virginia. These are preliminary counts as of August 15th, 2024.

Illinois: 122 this year versus 119 in 2003/2006.
Iowa: 131 this year versus 120 in 2004.
Kentucky: 57 this year versus 57 in 2011. *tie
Missouri: 97 this year versus 96 in 2006.
Nebraska: 131 this year versus 111 in 2004.
New York: 27 this year versus 25 in 1992.
Ohio: 78 this year versus 61 in 1992.
West Virginia: 19 this year versus 13 in 1998.
