Weekly Weather Watch: Monday, June 17th, 2024

It is a hot setup for a lot of North America this week, dozens of record highs will be set across the Eastern U.S., meanwhile heavy moisture will focus on the Northern Plains/Canadian Prairies/Upper Midwest and South Texas. Here’s an overview and then a bulleted list of the weather items that will make headlines you’ll see this week.

These significant outlooks are conditions described by the WPC.

  • Heavy rain and severe thunderstorms are possible today across the North-Central Plains, shifting north into the Northern Plains and Northern Minnesota late tonight into Tuesday. Flooding is possible here!

  • Heavy rain and severe thunderstorms will shift farther south from the Central Plains to the upper Midwest Tuesday night to Wednesday morning. Flooding is possible here!

  • A heat wave will expand from the central Plains across the Great Lakes, Ohio Valley and the Northeast today and remain across the Northeast through midweek.

  • A heavy rain threat is emerging along the central Gulf Coast today, followed by an increasing threat toward the Texas Gulf Coast later Tuesday and especially Wednesday.

  • Late-season wet snow will persist across the high elevations of the northern Rockies for the next couple of days.

  • Heavy moisture across Northern Manitoba.

  • Excessive heat across eastern Ontario and Quebec toward the Maritimes.

    Looking further:

  • Moderate risk of excessive heat across portions of the Ohio Valley, Northern Appalachians, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast Sat-Mon, Jun 22-24.

  • Moderate risk of excessive heat across portions of the Central Great Basin, Sat-Tue, Jun 22-25.

  • Slight risk of excessive heat across portions of the central and eastern CONUS, Sat-Wed, Jun 22-26.

  • Slight risk of excessive heat across portions of the western CONUS, Sat-Wed, Jun 22-26.

  • Moderate risk of heavy precipitation along the western and central Gulf of Mexico coast, Mon-Wed, Jun 24-26.

  • Slight risk of heavy precipitation for much of the Gulf Coast and Lower Mississippi Valley, Sat-Thu, Jun 22-27.

  • Slight risk of heavy precipitation across portions of the Northern Plains and Upper Mississippi Valley, Sat-Sun, Jun 22-23.

  • Slight risk of high winds across portions of the eastern Rockies, and the Central and Southern Plains, Sat-Mon, Jun 22-24.

  • Flooding possible across portions of the Gulf of Mexico coast.

  • Rapid Onset Drought Risk for parts of the eastern Corn Belt and Mid-Atlantic.

From that animation, the lines of thunderstorms are possibly severe each day. Just for today and tomorrow, here are the outlooks.

Too much is enough. The total rainfall on the way is quite impressive for the Northern U.S. and Texas. That’s a lot of water in both cases. These three maps show the total estimated precipitation on the way for this week, with two regions zoomed in. Heavy pockets of moisture for the far southern Canadian Prairies, too. Notice the 6-12 inches headed to much of South Texas! There will be areas of the country that flood this week.
